Herzegovina honey, along with Bihać area honey are the best known honeys in the Balkans, especially for its aromatic properties and for unpolluted soil in the area where the bees are situated, which is characterized by a relative lack of woody nectar plants and abundance of herbaceous plants. The consequence is that the bees concentrate on different flower-grass species – approximately 3700 of them, of which more than a half generally known in the Balkans grow in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This is the reason this honey has a strong aroma which is reflected in the Meadow Honey (Livadski med), Heather Honey (Med od vrijeska) from the Livno region and Sage Honey from the Trebinje municipality – all of them being the excellent products made in these areas.
Honey
Hives in hollow logs or made of woven straw are fascinating because of a centuries-old story about the relationship between humans and bees, which dates back to the second half of the twentieth century when hives with movable combs were developed in the Bihac area in 1884 and is present to date, especially in Herzegovina that is the leader in honey processing and production using high and advanced technology, while combining the respect for nature and advanced technological processes.
